My first experience with Jennifer E. Smith's writing style was when I bought The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight on a whim when it came out at the beginning of this year. I wasn't looking for much more from that book than a sweet love story, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was a depth to the story that made it all the more believable and beautiful. Smith's choice of using the third person present threw me at first, because that's not the typical style in YA novels, but it added a certain charm and careful feeling to the story that I ended up really loving. That was a five star book for me, one I wasn't expecting, and so when I was looking at my to read shelves the other day and realized that this was by the same author, I made it a priority and bought a copy for my Kindle. I'm happy to say that I'm glad I did.

Smith also uses the third person narrative in this novel, and it is a perfect fit for our two main characters. Peter and Emma are both loners of a sort, although for different reasons, and this perspective highlights their respective struggles to connect with others and to face the issues in their lives. They are unlikely partners in crime--and there is, technically, crime--and yet at the same time it seems like neither of them could embark on this journey without the other. To me this was really a story about understanding and making peace with the past. Peter is obsessed with maps and history but while he can recite the Gettysburg Address and navigate all over the country without consulting a map, he doesn't know much of his own personal history. Emma has always felt out of place in her family and so distanced herself from them and from everyone, but upon the discovery of her deceased twin, she feels the need to search for answers. Together, and through their trip, they manage to find some resolution, and you get the distinct feeling as you read that neither of them could have reached that place without the other.

This wasn't a light and fluffy read. It was a quiet, reflective novel that made me think without pushing too hard. It wasn't quite the five stars of The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, but it was definitely worth reading. I have a feeling this will be one of those books that I revisit when I need some good self reflection time. If you like books that make you think and somehow seem to sneak up on you, then this is a good one to pick up.

You Are Here Jennifer E Smith Books Reviews

This was a great book but I wish the dog would have had a name( I would have liked it to be a better ending also. I like her other books but not this one as much.
I am beginning to love Jennifer E. Smith's books as much as Sarah Dessen. They are good, heartfelt books that make you feel good inside at the end. Please keep writing!
I really loved the book. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because I felt the ending was too opened-ended. I wanted one more chapter or an epilogue. It still feels like there is some unfinished business. But it was still a really good read that I will definitely be reading again.
Now, I have read all 5 of Jennifer E. Smith's high school level books, and once again, my romantic spirit has been fed. I'm wondering when she will come out with another book, so I can continue reading. If you are a romantic female at heart - high school age or even older like me, check out any one of her 5 books.
Granddaughter loves it.
It was an interesting book. I thought it was going to be a little more moving, but it wasn't. It had good characters but I felt bored at times. It didn't draw me in as I wanted it to. It was very similar to John Green's Paper Towns but his was much much better. Still worth a read, I suppose as everyone is entitled to their own version of a road trip.
So I am a big fan of Jeniffer E. Smith because her works always find a way of just being heartwarming fun reads. This book is no exception. The only issues I have with it are more to do with the overall structure. The alternating perspective sometimes threw me off because Emma and Peter were to similar at times. Also the first like third was a bit slow and the end romance while cute was extremely rushed, it would have benefited from an extra chapter of development.
