The early years are particularly fascinating, revealing his experiences, feelings and aspirations. It provides insight into the strain on family life due to long separations during unaccompanied deployments. It is not without sadness due to the deaths of his first wife, a son and other family members, which lead to an increasing growth in his religious faith. In short, this is the story of an exemplary life of a very modest man who accomplished much in his journey and attributes everything to his strong faith in God.His simple, matter-of-fact style of writing is self effacing, but it is clear that he applied himself with great focus on accomplishing whatever mission he was assigned, both military and personal, and he was rewarded with successes and promotions, both in his military and private sector careers.
Having had the pleasure of meeting the author and contributing in a small way by photographing his military insignia for the book's cover, I found that reading his book was an interesting way of getting better acquainted with someone I already liked and admired. I was continually struck by his ability to have recalled, researched and recovered the myriad dates, details, names, places and events of a life time of experiences. To have recorded them in this manner for his family, friends and others is a wonderfully inspiring gift. It is yet another example of his dedication to the assignment. I salute you, sir. Mission accomplished!

This book is a quick read, and the general's love of country, family and God comes through clearly. Humbly written by a man who obviously has superior talents to be able to progress through the Army and a large private firm the way he did, and he didn't brag about it. He just told his story. The general notes that the "...United States is the greatest country in the world." The United States is the greatest nation on earth because God has blessed America by giving her people like Major General William B. Steele. His story is definitely worth reading.
